Dr. Amy Hutchison

Assistant Professor of Literacy Education

Iowa State University School of Education

When literacy advances, everyone wins. That's why Iowa State University

School of Education professor Amy Hutchison is doing her part to aid literacy

advancement through her research.Specifically, her area of focus is on where

literacy and technology intersect. And as it just so happens, her findings are shaping

the way the world looks at literacy education.

Hutchison studies the extent to which new skills and strategies are needed to be literate in digital environments and how to best support teachers in integrating digital technology into literacy instruction. Her research contributions have been recognized in many ways since her appointment at Iowa State. Most recently, she was the 2014 recipient of the Early Career Scholar Award given by the Technology as an Agent of Change in Teaching and Learning (TACTL) special interest group.

When it comes to achieving her educational goals, Hutchison credits Iowa State for helping her along the way. Said Hutchison, "Iowa State University values research and innovation. I have been privileged to work with colleagues who also value these things. It is through the support of the university and collaboration with my colleagues that I have been able to accomplish my research and teaching goals."

As for the future, Hutchison says she wants to always pursue innovative practices in education while pushing the boundaries of what is typical and what is possible. With her laser-like focus, there's really nothing she can't accomplish. "When I am interested in a topic, I pursue it deeply, thoroughly and don't stop until I have met my target," Hutchison said. Which means one thing – with her on its team, literacy is sure to keep advancing.

"I love working with students and that I am encouraged to be on the cutting edge of what is happening in education. I love that I get to better understand educational problems and try out creative solutions."
